McLean Brothers, High School Students Charlie, and A.J. Poole Raise Awareness for Caregiving Youth
The boys shared their story on caregiving for their grandmother through Alzheimer’s at the 6th Annual Brain Bowl event in Boca Raton, FL and are launching a local pilot program to help recognize caregiving youth
McLean, VA., February 3, 2020 – A Little bit of Happy - Kids Are Caregivers Too today announced, organization founders Charlie and A.J. Poole of McLean, Virginia, presented a speech on Caregiving Youth at an esteemed Alzheimer's Fundraiser - Brain Bowl 2020, in Boca Raton, Florida, on Friday, Jan. 31, 2020.
Charlie and A.J. took the stage this year at Brain Bowl 2020 to speak about Alzheimer's Caregiving from a kid's perspective. Charlie, a Junior at McLean High School, McLean, VA and A.J., a Freshman at Landon School in Bethesda, MD, told their story about helping provide care for two years for their grandmother, who had Alzheimer's. Their grandmother lived in their home when they were in grade school, and the boys were an integral part of her family caregiving team.
The boys are the public faces of the website – ‘A Little Bit of Happy, Kids Are Caregivers Too’ (www.kidsarecaregiverstoo.com) and have recently launched a pilot program at McLean High School to help identify and recognize kids by awarding them with service hours for their at-home caregiving. The initial outreach targets McLean; the goal is to expand the reach of the program regionally and then nationally.
The Poole family is working in partnership with The American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY), a 501c3 GuideStar Platinum organization headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida. There is a link on kidsarecaregiverstoo.com that connects to a survey on how they help provide care for someone in their home. The survey is sent to AACY for official recognition and service hour awards. There are no costs associated with this project; the goal is to raise awareness of caregiving youth and help provide recognition for kids who are caregiving.
If eligible, the kids who apply will receive official, accredited service hours from The American Association of Caregiving Youth. These service hours could help them stand out on college applications and could act as a differentiator when applying for other opportunities, from job applications to scholarships and more.

The Brain Bowl Luncheon is an annual benefit held at Boca West Country Club addressing Alzheimer's & Dementia chaired by Pamela Polani, Esq. This year's featured speaker was Dr. Oded Meiron of the Herzog Medical Center in Jerusalem, and the theme was “Caring across generations.”
